In a phone interview with WFTS, Helms said the gator was so large that he thought it was fake.

"I didn't know if we were being punked or something," Helms said.

Helms and his friend estimate the gator was anywhere between 14 and 15 feet long.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, the largest gator ever caught in the state of Florida was 14 feet and 3.5 inches.
