3-year-old found after being taken by mother

Mom arrested when missing son found at her Leesburg home

PALM BAY, Fla. – Police have found a 3-year-old boy who was taken by his mother from a Palm Bay home on Monday.

The boy was found unharmed with his mother, Alexis Mitchell, at her home in Leesburg late Tuesday, Palm Bay police spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said. Local 6 partner Florida Today reports.

"Leesburg police did arrest the mother for outstanding warrants," she said, adding that Palm Bay police sought arrest warrants for a burglary and battery that occurred while the child was taken.

A woman called police from the 600 block of Loffler Circle about 7:30 p.m. Monday and she was babysitting the boy when his mother, grandmother and another woman forced their way into her home and took the child, according to a news release from Palm Bay Police Department. The babysitter was pushed to the ground while the women allegedly grabbed the child.

Police had information that Mitchell, 23, lived in Leesburg and contacted police there.

"We were working with Leesburg police to do a well-being check" when the mother and son were located, Martinez said.

The boy has been turned over to family and police forwarded their reports to the Florida Department of Children and Families. DCF and the court system will determine the child's correct custody status.
