4 hurt during tractor pull at 'The Barn'

Police say part of Jeep exploded, sent metal fragments into crowd

SANFORD, Fla. – Four people were injured during a truck pull when pieces of a truck went flying into the crowd at a Sanford bar.

Sanford police said the incident occurred about 8:30 p.m. Saturday at The Barn, a country bar on French Avenue.

Police said two Jeeps were engaged in the pull when one of the Jeep's drive shafts disintegrated, sending pieces of metal into the crowd.

The driver of the Jeep suffered injuries to his legs, along with two other adult men suffered injuries to their legs. A boy also suffered a minor injury to his forehead. All injuries were considered non-life threatening.

Chad Gainey was the most seriously injured. A scorching piece of metal that came from one of the Jeeps cut through the only thing separating the spectators from the trucks - a plastic fence - and sliced his leg.

"The next thing I know it's this big old like boom noise, and the next thing I know I'm just laying on the ground," Gainey said, who is expected to be okay.

The truck pull continued after the incident, ending just before 10 p.m. No other accidents were reported for the rest of the night.

Sanford police are investigating.
