Construction taking place overnight on Beachline

Crews work to repair jagged piece of metal that damaged several cars

COCOA, Fla. - One westbound lane is closed on State Road 528 as crews work to repair a jagged piece of metal that popped up and damaged several cars earlier this month.

It happened on the Beachline at the bridge that crosses over U.S. 1 near Cocoa.

The piece of metal was part of an expansion joint, which runs across the road and is supposed to expand and contract to react to temperature changes.

On June 8, drivers first noticed the piece of metal that popped up when at least five cars were damaged.

One driver, who was on his way to the airport at the time, had severe damage to the undercarriage of his car, his tires and even his windshield.

Since then, crews have made several temporary repairs. They hope to have all of the work complete by Friday morning at 6 a.m.

The Florida Department of Transportation said although it is a rare occurrence, similar situations have happened before. The state may now be on the hook for repairs to the damaged vehicles.
