Daytona man carjacked while washing vehicle

Man injured as suspect drives off in his car, police say

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A Daytona Beach man washing his vehicle at his apartment complex late Thursday night was the victim of a carjacking, police said.

Daytona Beach police said 45-year-old Hong Zhang had his car running after cleaning it when an unidentified man or teen climbed into the driver's seat of the red 2010 Toyota Camry, backed out of the parking space and drove away recklessly.

The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m., according to a police report.

Zhang told police he reached into the car when he saw the assailant enter the vehicle, but fell to the ground and received abrasions on the right side of his body and top of his head when the man drove away.

Zhang described the man to police as a "chubby," 15 to 17 years old, about 5-foot-7 and 170 pounds.

Zhang said the culprit had been riding a bicycle nearby before the incident. Police found the bike nearby and filed it as evidence.

Police have not yet located the culprit or vehicle.
