WINDERMERE, Fla. - The Orange County Sheriff's Office is urging people to be on high alert after a spike in auto burglaries in the Bay Hill and Windermere areas.
Deputies handed out flyers that graded vehicles as high or low risk Monday afternoon. The flyers provided tips for drivers to avoid becoming a victim of a burglary.
"We're trying to remind citizens to lock your cars," said Lt. Bill Hinkey. "Put your valuables away so we can stop this increase in auto burglaries countywide."
Deputies said there have been more than 3,000 reports of vehicle burglary in 2013, which is a 10 percent jump from the same point last year.
The sheriff's office plans to be in the affected communities Tuesday as part of "National Night Out", which is a nationwide effort to promote crime prevention.
