Officials said the tree, which is estimated to be between 200-300 years old was struck by lightning back in August during a storm.

Officials started to remove the tree Sunday morning around 7 a.m. and it took them a few hours as the branches extended over the road.

Officials said the tree remained in place, in the median, after the road was built around it to preserve the historic DeLand landmark.

Officials with the Department of Transportation said a section of the tree will be cut and given to the City of DeLand to preserve the memory for historical reasons.
