"He was going to retrieve a football when he felt pain in his arm, and he realized he had been shot," Melbourne police Sgt. Sheridan Shelley said.

A bullet hit the back of the 54-year-old man's right arm and he was taken to an area hospital, police said.

"The victim then stated that he did not want further police involvement and declined to prosecute," Shelley said.

Police do not know who the shooter was or if other factors may have led to the shooting.

A football was found at the scene.
