Bathroom odor prompts hazmat evacuation

Woman inside apartment hospitalized

ORLANDO, Fla. – An apartment was evacuated early Friday after firefighters smelled a strange odor coming from a bathroom.

Firefighters responded to La Esperanza apartments when they received a medical call around 2:30 a.m.

Once inside, emergency crews found a woman who was suffering from an unknown medical issue.  They also smelled a strong chemical odor coming from a bathroom.

The apartment was evacuated and hazmat crews were called out to the scene when the source of the odor could not be determined.

Firefighters in protective suits spent over an hour in the apartment as they cleared the odor and removed chemicals.

After an extensive search, the source of the odor was found to be a mixture of three common household cleaners.

The family was allowed to return to their apartment after it was cleared.  The woman who lives there was taken by ambulance to Orlando Regional Medical Center.  Her condition is not known.
