ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando police said they are looking for a man who attempted to kidnap a 13-year-old who was out for a jog.
Police said around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, the teen reported he was out jogging and stopped to use a portable restroom at a construction site.
Police said when he came out, an unknown man called out to him to come to his car which was parked at Ethan Lane and Prospect Avenue.
Police said the man grabbed the victim and attempted to pull him to the bed of his pick-up truck that was parked.
Police said the victim was able to pull away and run from the area. The suspect left in an unknown direction and has not been located.
Becky and Evan Humphrey were shocked to hear about the attempted kidnapping.
"I'm a little taken aback that it happened so close to home," said Becky. "As a parent, that's alarming. That's frightening to think in broad daylight this could happen here."
The incident happened half-a mile away from Audubon Elementary School. The close-call has neighbors saying they'll be more cautious.
"I think I'll be more aware and be on the lookout for the other children I see walking to and from school," said Tisha Barberree.
The suspect is described as a large framed white male with red hair, blue eyes and a goatee, weighing approximately 200 lbs. He was driving a newer model black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, police said.
Monday morning, as kids in strollers, dads on bikes, and runners with friends traveled this route, the portable restrooms seemed to serve as a harsh reminder of a kid's close call.
"This is one of those places that you'd think would be safe, but you always have to be alert," said Mike Grossman, who has two teenage grandkids.
Laura Leigh Kirkland says there's an added risk, runners are usually oblivious.
"Runners have their headphones in and just aren't even aware cause when you're on a good run, you don't really care about the rest of the world," Kirkland said.
