ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando International Airport officials say one terminal is not enough for the 35 million people that use the airport per year, so an expansion is in the works.
The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority board is considering building a new terminal at a cost of $1 billion. The expansion also calls for a new parking garage for $210 million, a new monorail to service the complex for $181 million.
A new train terminal to be paid for by Florida East Coast Railway is also in the works, with the railway wanting to build a new train from OIA down to Miami for $1 billion.
According to the artist renderings, the new terminal would be called the South Terminal, where on one side passengers would check-in and board their planes. Next to the terminal is a parking garage with room for 3,500 cars, including rental cars and then the train terminal.
There are no set dates for the expansion, as the board will negotiate for 60 days. Until then, officials will continue to design it in hopes of a building completion date in 2015.
