Study: 1 in 5 Americans lack access to broadband internet

Pew research study reports 70% have access

A Pew Research Center study released Monday reported that only 70 percent of Americans have access to broadband internet access.

According to the study, men are more likely than women to have internet access at home, and whites are also more likely then minorities.

The disparity gap between whites and minorities with internet access is apparently closing though.

Pew has been studying internet access since 2000 and reports that this gap is disappearing, especially when other factors like household income are added.

When it comes to income, 89 percent of adults who make over $75,000 a year have broadband access while only 41 percent who make less than $30,000 a year have it.

As for internet usage, the study reports that it  increased from just 14 percent of American adults in 1999 to 78 percent in August 2011.
