Troopers: Spring break student hits Highway Patrol cars

ORLANDO, Fla. – A 19 year female college student from Texas, in Central Florida for spring break, was cited for careless driving after she slid into two Florida Highway Patrol cars.

It happened Friday at the Turkey Lake Service Plaza on Florida's Turnpike.

Trooper John Muniz, with the Highway Patrol, says the driver was heading Northbound on the service plaza access road, but thought she was in the merge lane to reenter the turnpike.  Trooper Muniz says the driver was going between 45 and 50 miles per hour when she failed to navigate a turn.  She lost control, slid through the grass into the Highway Patrol parking lot and hit two unmanned patrol cars.

Both patrol cars were heavily damaged and the SUV also had heavy front end damage.

No Highway Patrol members were hurt. The driver and passenger of the SUV were also unhurt.

Trooper Muniz says there was no evidence of alcohol. Both the driver and her passenger were wearing seat belts.
