Police: Mom, baby shot while sleeping

Woman shot in leg, baby in foot early Sunday

OCALA, Fla. – Ocala police said they are investigating a shooting that injured a mother and her baby early Sunday morning.

Police said they were called out to the Ocala Place Apartments at 2135 NW 1st Ave. around 5:30 a.m. Sunday for a shooting.

Police said when they arrived, they found Kendra Tucker and her 10-month-old child had been shot while they were sleeping.

Tucker told police she was asleep then woke up when she had been shot in the leg. Police said her baby was shot in the foot while in his crib.

Tucker and her baby were taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center and are expected to recover. Family members say Tucker has since been released, but her son underwent surgery at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Both are expected to be OK, according to family.

Police said when they did a search of the apartment they found three bullet holes in Tucker's bedroom window.

It's unclear if Tucker was a target or if the shooting was random.

Tucker's sister-in-law Julisa Simmons told Local 6 she was scared and angry about the shooting.

"I'm hurt," said Simmons.

Simmons said she didn't know why anyone would want to harm Tucker or her children.

"They need to catch him. This person still running. What if somebody else's child gets shot? What's gonna happen then?" she said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them.
