Sanford prepares for George Zimmerman trial

Police Chief Cecile Smith says 'world looking at Sanford'

SANFORD, Fla. – Sanford city officials say they don't know what to expect, but they're preparing for the increased attention the city is expected to have during the George Zimmerman murder trial.

"The world is looking at Sanford, and how Sanford responds is huge," said Sanford police Chief Cecile Smith.

Smith said that in addition to tight security at the Seminole County Courthouse in Sanford, there will be an increased police presence on the streets.

He joined local pastors Thursday to go door to door and in the Goldsboro neighborhood to meet with residents.

"Our hope is that the citizens of Sanford remain calm as calm as they have thus far," Smith said.

A jury was seated in Zimmerman's trial earlier Thursday. Opening statements begin on Monday.
