SANFORD, Fla. - The City of Sanford is asking the Florida state government for help pay for the some of the costs related to the George Zimmerman case, the neighborhood watchman who faces a second-degree murder charge after police said he shot and killed Trayvon Martin.
So far, costs related to the case are more than $385,000, including:
- $96,000 in overtime
- $182,000 in regular time
- $106,000 in other expenses
Those costs don't include ones by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the state attorney's office, and the special prosecutor.
The city is seeking assistance from the state to pay some of the costs.
Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty. He has said he shot Martin in self-defense.
