School janitor accused of having sex with student

Officials: Man met teen online, victim thought he was also a teen

ORANGE CITY – A high school janitor is out on bond after admitting to investigators that he had sex with a student, officials said.

Juan Davila Granada, 24, told investigators he met the 17-year-old University High School student on the website Tagged.com, which promotes itself as helping users "Meet new people, make new friends, and maybe even find love."

The report states the two began to text at night while Granada was working as a school janitor. For weeks, they tried to set up a sexual encounter and finally had sex at her house "while her parents were asleep," according to the report.

The teen tried to hide the encounter from her parents, but finally told investigators, "I had a sexual relationship with Juan but at the time I believed he was 18 years old," the report said.

Granada told Local 6 he thought she was 18. But some people don't buy his claims.

"It doesn't matter. It's somebody in high school," said Paulina Hernandez, whose younger sister recently graduated from UHS in Orange City.

The teen told investigators the sex was mutual, but the law says otherwise. Granada is 24. She is 17. And he knew she was a student at the school.

Granada denied the allegations to Local 6's Shaun Chaiyabhat and said, "Everything will be clarified and it's still going under investigation... Everything will clear up."

The report said Granada has fully cooperated with investigators.

Volusia County Schools spokeswoman Nancy Wait said Granada resigned the day the principal found out about the sexual encounter and confronted him. It's still unclear how the principal learned about the janitor's actions. Wait went on to say, as soon as the school found out, officials called the sheriff's office, the girl's parents, and the Department of Children and Families, which is also investigating the case.
