APOPKA, Fla. - A Orange County Public Schools computer technician resigned Thursday, a day after being arrested on child porn charges.
Apopka police say they honed in on James Giles' apartment in July and investigators found that he had been sharing more than 80 child porn files with others across the Internet.
Some of the files were photos; some of them were videos; all of them were illegal.
On August 1, Apopka police and Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers served a search warrant at his apartment while he was at work and his three kids were home alone.
According to the Apopka police report, the kids were playing video games on their own computers, and they said they were not allowed to use the "back room" computer because it belonged to their dad.
Eventually, investigators said they found 37 files on that computer that indicated sexual exploitation of children -- titles too graphic to share.
The Department of Children and Families intervened to ensure Giles' three children were OK. They're now in the custody of their mother, while their dad faces six counts of child porn.
Giles was on paid administrative leave until his legal matters were settled, but after he got out of jail Thursday morning, he resigned his position with the school district effective immediately, school district leaders told Local 6.
School officials said he had most recently worked at the Ronald Blocker Education Leadership Center in downtown Orlando as a computer programmer.
Giles started working with OCPS at Carver Middle School as a tech support rep in 2005. He then moved on to Wekiva High School in 2007. In 2011, he worked at the district office as a tech support rep and in 2012 he became an application analyst before being put on relief of duty pending the outcome of a self-reported child porn investigation in August 2013.
