Magic cheerleader injured during stunt

Jamie Woode suffers vertebrae fractures, broken rib

ORLANDO, Fla. – A member of the Orlando Magic Stunt Team fell off a teammate's shoulders during Tuesday night's game at the Amway Center, fracturing three vertebrae and breaking a rib, according to team officials.

Jamie Woode was in stable condition at a hospital a day after paramedics put a brace on her neck and carried her off on a stretcher between the first and second quarters of the Magic game versus the New York Knicks.

"She just fell right on her neck. It was horrible seeing that," said Marina Elliot, a spectator at the game. "I hope she's OK."

Woode appeared motionless for several minutes while sprawled out on the court, surrounded by paramedics.

"It was scary. She didn't get up a long time," said Megan Brown. "I was in dance. My friends were in cheer. I know how that is."

Woode, who is not employed by the Orlando Magic but was hired by a separate company, suffered no neurological damage and is expected to make a full recovery, according to team officials.

As the former University of Central Florida cheerleader was lifted onto a stretcher, fans cheered. Then, while Woode was being wheeled away, she waved her hands to the sold-out crowd at Amway Center.

Woode suffered no neurological damage and is expected to make a full recovery. She and her family respectfully ask for privacy at this time.

In 2003, Woode broke a bone in her calf and yet went on to help UCF's cheerleading squad win its first-ever national championship.

After the Magic's 89-99 loss to the Knicks, Magic head coach Jacques Vaughn spoke about Woode before discussing basketball.

"I think our thoughts and prayers should be acknowledged for the young lady who fell," said Vaughn.
