Man arrested after crash near UCF while allegedly on heroin, alcohol

UCF police now carrying opioid antagonists in case of overdoses

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Central Florida said a man was arrested after he crashed his vehicle on Jan. 11 near the Education Complex while allegedly under the influence of heroin and alcohol.

When officers found William Jefferey Lopez, he was partially conscious. Heroin, paraphernalia and a pistol were found in and near his vehicle.

Lopez was arrested arrested on several charges. Officials said he and a female passenger have no affiliation with the college.

A few bricks that line the back entrance to the Education Complex were knocked out of place, but no major damage or injuries were reported.

Officials said all UCF police began carrying naloxone (pictured) on Jan. 4. It is an opioid antagonist that counters heroin overdoses.

Officers said that while they did not use it the night of Lopez's crash, they know that heroin has become popular in Central Florida and that they want to be prepared to save lives in any similar situations.

It's unclear what charges were brought against Lopez.
