VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Volusia County father left jail Wednesday night after his arrest for allegedly pointing a gun right at a 16-year-old boy he found in his stepdaughter's bedroom.
It happened at the family's home in the Victoria Woods subdivision in DeLand on Tuesday, when police arrested Timothy Estes, 39, and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse.
"I understand the emotions there," said neighbor Rollin Goldsberry. "He was carried away with his emotions when he did that. He wanted the kid out of there, but I think he could have done it other ways. I would think that if it were my son or daughter involved, guns wouldn't be necessary to resolve that issue."
According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the 16-year-old boy said he was charging his phone in the 14-year-old girl's closet when Estes forced him out of the house with a gun pointed at the back of his head.
"I came to my friend's house to get my wallet, (redacted) put a gun to me and put it in the back of my head," the teen said in the 911 call. "He's retired Navy. And he went in his room and got the gun."
The paper said Estes told the boy, "You're lucky I don't kill you. Next time I see you I am going to kill you."
Officers alleged Estes slapped his stepdaughter, then forced her to do squats and push-ups and threatened to beat her.
Estes reportedly told police, "Because with a 14-year-old, you only need to do a little to get the point across."
The Department of Children and Families is getting involved with the investigation to see if the 14-year-old girl had experienced any previous violence.
According to the report, the girl told police that she invited that boy to come hang out at the house.
It's still unclear what relationship the teens had before all this happened.
