Man arrested in 2002 Daytona Beach rape

Carl Perdew faces charges of sexual battery, robbery

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A 43-year-old man was arrested Monday in a rape that occurred in 2002, Daytona Beach police said.

Carl Perdew was arrested in Ormond Beach on charges of sexual battery and robbery.

According to Daytona Beach police, a woman reported that she was raped and robbed in September 2002.  DNA from the sexual battery was submitted to the Combined DNA Index System, known as CODIS, police said.

In August 2012, Perdew was arrested on a charge of solicitation of prostitution, and because of an ongoing investigation into a serial murderer, a DNA swab was obtained from Perdew and entered into the CODIS, according to police. Police said the investigation was ongoing since 2006 when the city's serial murders began.

Police said In November 2012, a positive hit was confirmed on Perdew in reference to the reported rape.

"He knew what he did in 2002, he probably never would have thought in a million years there would have ever been DNA," said Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood.

A warrant was obtained for Perdew on Friday, and he was arrested by Ormond Beach police on Monday.

Perdew's DNA did not match the DNA found in the serial murderers so he's not a suspect in that case.
