Man arrested in Habitat for Humanity burglary

Police recognized suspect from surveillance video

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – Winter Garden police have arrested the man they said burglarized a Habitat for Humanity building.

Johnny Wayne Smith, 39, was arrested at his home Wednesday afternoon.

The burglary was discovered Wednesday morning when volunteers arrived at the store at 114 S. Dillard Street in Winter Garden.

Police said they recognized Smith from surveillance video that captured the burglary, and officers recovered several of the stolen items from Smith's home.

Smith stole tools, jewelry and change from donation jar, police said.

Winter Garden police said volunteers contacted authorities after finding the front door of the store damaged and items stolen.  Store managers estimated the damages and losses at about $500.

Smith also attempted to steal money from the store's cash register, but it had been emptied the previous night, police said.

A group of people helped clean up the store, which reopened later Wednesday.
