ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - A man was arrested on a DUI charge in Volusia County two years to the day after he allegedly killed two Flagler County teens while driving under the influence.
Louis Prinzo, 24, was arrested over the weekend in Ormond Beach. His arrest comes exactly two years after a he was involved in a crash on Interstate 95 that killed Meredith Smith, of Palm Coast, and Lane Burnsed, of Bunnell.
Ormond Beach police said officers went to Prinzo's home on Saturday after a motorist called 911 to report an erratic driver at LPGA and Clyde Morris boulevards.
A police report said Prinzo had an empty insulin syringe behind his left ear, but he refused to say what had been in it. The night of the 2012 crash, police said paramedics also found an empty syringe in Prinzo's pocket.
Ormond Beach police said Prinzo seemed to be under the influence of a controlled substance, and he failed field sobriety tests he was given at the Police Department.
According to Ormond Beach police, Prinzo said he was under a lot of stress because it was the two-year anniversary of the fatal crash.
Prinzo, who was out of jail on $100,000 bond in the 2012 crash, was arrested on charges of DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to jail and his bond was revoked.
Local 6 spoke to Jamey Burnsend, Lane Burnsed's father, about Prinzo's latest arrest.
"I don't believe he ever set out to do the harm that he did for anybody," Burnsend said. "But again, we all make bad decisions and obviously he's at a point where he needs some kind of help."
Burnsend said he's not angry at Prinzo but thinks he should still be held accountable for his actions.
"It's not my job to tell anybody how to fix the judicial system or how to fix Louis Prinzo's life. It's my job to say that some things need to happen. Something needs to be done differently the next time."
Prinzo was charged in the fatal crash in October 2013 after a year-long investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 21.
