2-year-old found safe after carjacking, Orange County deputies say
Carjacking culprit still on the loose
A father has refused to press charges after his car was stolen from his apartment parking lot with his 2-year-old child still in the back seat.
The incident happened shortly before noon on Friday in the parking lot of the Chowder Bay Apartments, located at the corner of Rio Grande Avenue and Holden Avenue in Orlando.
The father told Orange County sheriff's deputies he was grabbed and thrown from his car before the unknown man got behind the wheel and drove off with his child in the back seat.
The car was found about 10 minutes later in another apartment complex about one block away with the child asleep, but fine, investigators said.
Witnesses told Local 6 another account of what happened.
One man told us the father wasn't in the car at the time the car was stolen. He was in his apartment.
"When he said the kid was in the car, I said, 'oh, my God'," said neighbor Michael Gaeta.
Gaeta says he saw the father come out of his apartment screaming with a cell phone in his hand.
It's not known why the father declined to press charges, even though the man who allegedly stole the car is still at-large.
