SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. - An early morning ATM run ended with a brief chase into a doughnut shop parking lot and questions for the driver suspected of ramming into a pole at the bank, police report.
Local 6 partner Florida Today reports the incident began about 7:30 a.m. after the bank manager of a Wells Fargo branch at 1090 State Road A1A called Satellite Beach police to report that a customer had just struck the pole and fled the parking lot in a white Nissan sport utility vehicle. The 30-foot tall pole snapped and came to a rest on the bank's stand-alone drive-through section.
The manager also followed the vehicle and called police after the driver pulled into a Dunkin Donuts shop less than a half a mile to the north, officials reported.
The unidentified driver stepped out of the vehicle and walked into the doughnut shop, the bank manager reported to police. Patrol officers arrived moments later and questioned the man.
"We're trying to figure out what happened, he said he was checking his bank statement and then when he was trying to leave hit the pole," Lt. Bert Berrios said.
Officers noted the front end damage to the man's SUV and conducted a sobriety test. Berrios said charges were pending in the case.
