Man dies after driving into pond at Orlando International Airport

Victim pronounced dead at Florida Hospital East

ORLANDO, Fla. – A driver pulled from a pond Monday morning at Orlando International Airport later died at a hospital, according to airport officials.

The driver, identified as David Alexander Long, 59, crashed his green truck into the pond around 9 a.m. at 8401 Case Verde Road.

Police said they believe Long struck a pole before losing control and going into the pond.

The man was able to get out of the truck and tried swimming for safety, police said. Several witnesses also got in the water to try and save the man, according to police.

Rescue crews and Orlando firefighter divers conducted a search for the driver, who was located and taken to Florida Hospital East and was later pronounced dead, airport officials said.

The truck was later pulled from the pond.

The Orlando Police Department will investigate the fatal crash and are investigating if it could have been a medical situation that caused the driver to crash.

No other details were released.
