DeLand skydiver dies after parachute fails to deploy
Witnesses say man didn't have enough time to deploy reserve chute
DeLand police say a 62-year-old skydiver died Wednesday in a fall after his parachute failed to deploy.
Santiago Rosell, of Altamonte Springs, was killed in the accident, which happened around 5 p.m. in the 1600 block of Flightline Boulevard near Skydive DeLand.
Witnesses said Rosell was not doing a tandem skydive, and when his parachute failed he did not have enough time to deploy his reserve chute.
Skydive Deland is considered a world-class skydiving facility, but there have been several accidents since 2000. There have been six deaths, three of those since 2008, and several more injuries.
The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the incident.
