SANFORD, Fla. -

A man drowned Monday in a retention pond in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

Sanford police spokeswoman Shannon Cordingly said a friend of the man called 911 shortly before 6 p.m. Crews responded near the intersection of Country Club Circle and Country Club Drive, where they pulled the man's body from the water.

"We would talk every once in a while," said neighbor Alex Strickling. "I feel bad for the family."

Strickling told Local 6 he saw the victim and his friend at a convenience store on Monday afternoon. He said he watched them cross the street and jump a fence that led to the retention pond. He said he didn't think they would swim since the water was infested with alligators and wasn't clean.

Police don't believe an alligator attack led to his death. Cordingly said it appears the drowning was accidental.

The Police Department is not releasing the victim's name until his family is notified, but Strickling said he lived a few blocks away from the pond.
