Deputies find man dead in Volusia street

Death possibly linked to house fire in Ormond Beach

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A man found dead in a Volusia County street shot and killed himself after his home caught fire, according to deputies.

Volusia County deputies said Michael Egli, 38, was found dead around midnight Thursday from a gunshot wound to his head on River Drive off State Road A1A, north of State Road 40 in Ormond Beach.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said a deputy was headed to a structure fire and spotted a man, later identified as Egli, leaving the area. The deputy tried to talk to Egli, but he ignored him, officials said.

The deputy then heard a gunshot and a short time later found Egil lying dead in the road, officials said.

It was later determined that Egil lived in the house that caught fire.

An investigation is ongoing.
