Teen turns himself in after fatally shooting man during drug deal, police say

Suspect accused of selling marijuana to victim

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – An 18-year-old man fatally shot another man during a drug deal gone wrong in Volusia County late Tuesday afternoon, the Daytona Beach Police Department said.

Daytona Beach police Chief Craig Capri said the suspect, Keyonte Upton, called 911 to turn himself in and confess hours after the shooting.

“To have a homicide with no name of a suspect, and then 12 hours later, you have a suspect in custody, and you have a suspect turning himself in, because he knows what the Daytona Beach Police Department is capable of doing, we’re coming after him, and he comes in and turns himself in and confesses to this horrible crime, to me that’s a success," Capri said.

Police said Upton, who recently turned 18, met up with Janaree Williams, 19, shortly before 4 p.m. on Park Drive to sell him marijuana. Upton got inside the 2011 Dodge Williams was in with two other people, according to the arrest report.

There was some sort of dispute over the marijuana sale, and Upton pulled out a gun while exiting the Dodge and shot inside the vehicle, police said. Williams was unarmed.

Janaree Williams, left, was fatally shot by Keyonte Upton, right, according to Daytona Beach police.

Williams drove after Upton but failed to maintain control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. He got out of the vehicle to chase after Upton on Division Street, and police said Upton fatally shot Williams in the chest.

Witnesses who were with Williams picked him up off the ground and put him in the backseat of the Dodge, where police found him dead, the report said.

Upton was arrested on first-degree murder and armed burglary charges after turning himself in at the police station.

“He shot and killed a man, 4 o'clock in the afternoon in a residential area. To me, that’s a problem. I’m glad we were able to get him off the streets,” Capri said.
