Man found shot outside burning home in Orlando identified

Orlando Sentinel delivery worker discovers house fire, shooting victim

ORLANDO, Fla. – A newspaper deliveryman discovered a man suffering from several gunshot wounds and burns after noticing a house was ablaze in Orlando, according to officials.

The worker, who was delivering the Orlando Sentinel, noticed the fire around 4 a.m. Tuesday at a house on Quincy Woods Lane, just north of State Road 417 in south Orange County.

The deliveryman then saw 44-year-old James Succi struggling near the home, and when he went to drag him out of the home, the deliveryman noticed that Succi had been shot, deputies said.

Succi was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he is in critical condition but is expected to survive.

Richard Padilla, a neighbor of Succi, said his sister called him in a panic after she had heard the commotion and tried to help Succi.

"By the time she came out he was on the floor bleeding and she was trying to help talk to him and keep him awake," Padilla said.

"He was real beat up," said neighbor Jomar Landru, who added that the victim is going to be the godfather of his unborn child.  "I don't know who'd take their time to do this.  He's such a good person."

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the house was destroyed in the fire and the shooting victim's dog was killed in the fire.

Officials said Succi's car may have been stolen and set ablaze near Sandy Oaks Lane and Lancaster Road, about 10 miles from his house.

"The car was totally engulfed in flames," a neighbor said.  "We didn't hear or see nothing."

"Our investigators believe this was not a random act of violence," said Jane Watrel of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
