Man shot, killed by Eustis officer identified

Man was under investigation for sexual misconduct with minor allegations, police say

LEESBURG, Fla. – The man who was shot and killed by a Eustis police officer inside the Laurel Oaks Apartments in Leesburg was identified on Wednesday.

The shooting occurred Tuesday evening at the Laurel Oaks Apartments.

The Leesburg Police Department told Local 6 that its officers and Eustis police went to a third-floor apartment as part of an investigation involving allegations of sexual misconduct with a child under 12 years old and possession of child pornography.

The man, identified as 47-year-old Vernum H. Blunk, armed himself with a handgun and threatened Eustis Detective Sgr. Gary Winheim, according to police. Winheim shot and killed Blunk as a result of the confrontation.

The details of the shooting are under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The original allegations are still under investigation by Leesbug police and Eustis police.

Local 6 spoke to a woman who said Blunk lived at the apartment with his girlfriend and her teenage daughter.

"It's scary because I have three young kids at home and live 150 to 200 feet from all of this," neighbor Katrina Scolpini said.

Jaclyn Bailey came out of her apartment, along with several other neighbors.

"I'm ready to move now," Bailey said. "I'm definitely not feeling comfortable living here knowing that's happening."

Winheim, who has been with department since 1996, has been placed on administrative leave, which is normal procedure.
