ORLANDO, Fla. – Orange County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a suspect Friday morning while serving an arrest warrant after the man pointed a gun at deputies, officials said.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Jeremy Lewis, 33, died in the shooting, which occurred around 9:50 a.m. during a drug investigation at a home on 25th Street in Orlando.
According to officials, the Sheriff's Office SWAT team entered the home and Lewis pointed a gun at deputies.
"The deputies were left with no other alternative but to respond with deadly force," the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.
Lewis was shot multiple times by two members of the SWAT team and died, authorities said.
"In these situations, they have to make a split-second decision to protect themselves and, obviously, it appeared this individual had a handgun," Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said. "They took the action I believe that was necessary in order for them to protect themselves."
According to records, Lewis was a convicted felon who had been arrested previously on multiple charges, including aggravated battery on a pregnant woman, grand theft and assault.
A small child was also in the house at the time of the shooting, but was not injured, officials said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting and the deputies involved will be assigned to administrative duties, which is standard procedure in law enforcement shootings.
