Man surrenders in Cocoa standoff

Dennis Aikens Jr. taken into custody

COCOA, Fla. – Police reopened a Cocoa neighborhood sealed off during a standoff Wednesday morning after the suspect was taken into custody.

Cocoa police Officer Barbara Matthews said 26 year-old Steve Dennis Aikens Jr., sought on multiple warrants, was spotted around 9:30 a.m. bailing out of a vehicle and running from authorities near Western Avenue, south of Parrish Road and east on Interstate 95 in Cocoa. He then hid in a building.

A Brevard County sheriff's helicopter searched for him while officers surrounded the home where they believed Aikens had hiding. A SWAT team was called out, and the suspect surrendered about noon, police said.

Aikens was being been sought on a number of drug-related warrants, officials said.
