Marina bar along Wekiva River burns to ground

Cause of fire under investigation

LONGWOOD, Fla. – A bar along the Wekiva River burned to the ground early Monday in Longwood, and the cause of the blaze remains a mystery.

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. at the Wekiva Island bar near Wekiva Springs Road.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the blaze at the 2,000-square-foot bar is under investigation.

The owners of the bar arrived at the scene later Monday morning.

"They are all there digging through what's left," said bar owner Bill Weinaug.  "It stinks.  (It's) kind of a bummer.  We are building a dream here, so we will keep going.   It's going to set us back a little bit.  It was a cool place and will still be a cool place."

The spot, which was popular year-round, will remain closed until further notice.

In 1999, a bar at the same location -- then known as Alexander's Riverfront Restaurant -- was destroyed in a fire.  That fire was sparked by bad wiring, according to the state fire marshal, who ruled the blaze accidental.
