ORLANDO, Fla. -

The gay community will gather in downtown Orlando on Thursday night to celebrate what many are calling a victory for civil rights.

Organizers expect thousands to come to Lake Eola bandshell for an event that was previously planned in advance but now will celebrate the Supreme Court rulings from Wednesday.

The Supreme Court justices ruled legally married, same-sex couples should be allowed the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples. Many say the ruling will help pave the way to legalizing gay marriage across the board.

Red luminaries lined Lake Eola as a symbol for marriage equality. Several politicians are scheduled to speak at the rally.

The rally was held at Lake Eola park at 7 p.m.
