Masked gunman carjacks Uber driver near Mall at Millenia

Orange County deputies search for gray 2016 Chrysler 300

ORLANDO, Fla. – An Uber driver was carjacked at gunpoint Tuesday night near the Mall at Millenia, Orange County sheriff's deputies said.

The armed carjacking was reported at 9:40 p.m. in the 5600 block of Kingsgate Drive.

According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the Uber driver went to Kingsgate Drive to pick up a customer. A gunman wearing a ski mask and dark clothing confronted the driver, demanded personal property and stole the driver's car, deputies said.

The Uber driver is OK and ran to Beatriz Agudelo’s home nearby for help.

"The guy asked, 'I need to call the cops, I need to call the cops because somebody stole my car.' My son came and he opened the door and he called the police," Agudelo said.

Agudelo said the Uber driver was terrified.

"Somebody put a gun to his head and asked for his car, wallet and phone," Agudelo said.

Neighbors say they're being more careful and they're worried the incident will give the area a bad reputation.

"Because now all the Uber cars, Lyft and taxis are not going to want to come to this neighborhood," said Marisol Malbica.

Investigators said the Uber driver made the right decision not to fight back.

"If you’re being attacked, especially during the holiday season, just comply with what they’re asking for, then try to get a good look at the individual and contact 911 immediately," said Ingrid Tejada-Monforte, with the Sheriff's Office.

An Uber spokesperson said the company is cooperating with law enforcement officers.

“What’s been reported by police is deeply troubling and we’ve been in touch with the driver to check on his well-being. We’ll work with law enforcement to assist with their investigation,” the statement read.

The assailant was described as 25 to 30 years old, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and 160 pounds.

The stolen car is a gray 2016 four-door Chrysler 300, with the Florida tag: JPKL93.

Anyone with information about the carjacking is asked to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
