Melbourne Beach mayor Tom Davis resigns
Special election to be held in November
Melbourne Beach Mayor Tom Davis resigned Monday afternoon amid political turmoil in the beachside town.
Davis, a retired Florida Department of Law Enforcement criminal profiler, was elected in November 2011.
Florida Today, Local 6's news partner, reported that during last Wednesday’s Melbourne Beach Town Commission meeting, Davis booted Commissioner Jay Gurecki from the Community Center after they verbally clashed during a regular meeting.
Gurecki was scheduled to pursue sanctions against three Town Hall administrators -- calling for discipline, investigation and non-renewal of an employment contract -- later during that meeting.
“I believe I can no longer effectively serve the interests of the people and employees in Melbourne Beach with the current open tensions among the commission,” Davis wrote in his resignation letter.
“I cannot passively watch unjust actions, as I am a person of honor and respect. I can only hope a change in leadership may encourage a new decorum,” he wrote.
Vice Mayor Rocco Maglio will serve as mayor through November, when a special election will occur.
The Town Commission has 30 days to appoint a replacement commissioner.
