MELBOURNE, Fla. -

Melbourne City Council took the first steps to restrict panhandling in the city.

According to Local 6 News partner Florida Today, council members approved two ordinances during a vote Tuesday night.

The ordinances would ban aggressive panhandling citywide, panhandling and soliciting in any form in the downtown area, and panhandling at ATMs, bus stops, government parking lots and public bathrooms.

Tuesday night's vote is only an initial approval.  The council will take a second vote at its next meeting July 8.
