Melbourne police commend young people who get results in their community

Boys turn in loaded gun, another boy makes gifts to support police

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Melbourne police Friday honored children for getting results.

At the Dorcas Outreach Center for Kids, police awarded two brothers and their uncle certificates of appreciation.

Police said the boys were playing outside when they found a loaded handgun.

Never touching it, they told their parents, who called police.

Criss-crossing the community, Melbourne police gave another thank you Friday to a 14-year-old who made keychains for officers.

"I just thought that the police have a bad rep right now and I felt bad. So, I wanted to show them that there's people who still care," said Kobi Ference, an incoming freshman at Satellite Beach High School.

Ference and his mother dropped off 50 hand-made key chains at the Melbourne Police Station Wednesday.
Friday morning, police thanked Ference with a knock at his door.

"I was at a loss for words when I saw that they showed up," said Ference. "The gift was supposed to be for them. I did not expect them to go this far with this."

"Nothing but polite and thank yous all around. It was very nice," said Ference's mother, Jamie.

"Today is one of those days that really makes me happy to wear a badge everyday."
