A Melbourne police officer has been placed on administrative leave after being involved in a deadly collision with a bicyclist, officials said.
The officer, identified as 33-year-old Steve Linthicum, was responding to a call, Wednesday night when he struck a bicyclist, identified only as a man in his 50s, Florida Highway Patrol investigators said.
The crash happened about 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Bluebird Boulevard and the 500 block of East Eau Gallie Boulevard in beachside Melbourne.
The bicyclist was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne where he was pronounced dead, officials report.
Melbourne police referred any questions to the Florida Highway Patrol.
“I can tell you that the officer was responding to a possible disturbance call,” said Melbourne police Sgt. Sheridan Shelly.
Linthicum did not, however, have his car lights or siren activated, police said.
Florida Highway Patrol investigators are looking into how fast the marked Chevrolet Impala was traveling and the positioning of the bicyclist.
An investigation is ongoing.
