ORLANDO, Fla. – A woman who was found dead in the shallow section of a lake nearby has been identified on Wednesday.
About 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, officers were called to the club in the Rosemont and Lake Orlando area in reference to a missing person.
Laura Gonsalves' employer, Discount Golf Balls, reported that she had not been seen in about five hours, and there was information that she might be in one of the ponds or lakes, according to Orlando police.
Neighbors told Local 6 Gonsalves, 38, was an experienced diver who may have been diving for golf balls.
The golf cart was still stacked with golf balls Tuesday night, sitting in the dark, parked at the edge of Lake Orlando. It hasn't moved since 12:30 p.m. when the person driving it went into the water and never came out.
Denise Kennard lives right across the street from the fifth tee. She's seen the woman diving for golf balls there many times.
"About 2 o'clock we had walked past her, saw the cart and golf ball, assumed she was under there. Didn't know she had gone in at 12:30," said Kennard. "I said, 'Look, she's doing pretty good today.'"
That was until firefighters, police and the dive team showed up. Kennard took pictures of the rescue-turned recovery, when they found the woman's body in a shallow section of the lake.
"Sad, very sad. Wish I had something earlier," said Kennard. "We didn't think anything of it."
What makes this more sad for neighbors is the golf club closed Tuesday -- it was just sold. Neighbors said after 13 years under the previous ownership, this was an awful way to close down a landmark.
No foul play is suspected.
