Mock shuttle tank heads from Kennedy Space Center to museum
Tank can be seen on Intracoastal Waterway
Wednesday evening drivers may see more then just a traffic jam.
A 200-foot barge carrying a mockup shuttle external tank and other artifacts will be seen en route from KSC this afternoon to the Wings of Dreams Aviation Museum in Starke, Local 6 partner Florida Today reports.
Much like to social media campaign NASA last year to "spot the shuttle," local area residents are encouraged to “spot the tank” and submit photos to Kennedy’s social media sites.
Pulled by two tugs, the barge will travel along the Intracoastal Waterway and St. Johns River to Green Cove Springs, between Palatka and Jacksonville, where it’s expected to arrive at the museum by Saturday.
The roadtrip will begin around 4 p.m., and pass the draw bridge over State Road 3 south of the center. It's route after that is not confirmed.
The tank for years was displayed with a pair of solid rocket boosters outside the KSC Visitor Complex. The complex removed the display to make way for the new building housing the retired orbiter Atlantis, which will open to the public in late June.
