Leesburg police arrested a woman they say left her 1-year-old daughter in her vehicle in a parking lot on Sunday afternoon as temperatures rose above 90 degrees.
Shannon Mixer, 34, has been charged with child abuse in the Sunday afternoon incident. Police said the caller reported the baby was left with the vehicle running at 10601 US 441 for about 20 minutes at around 1:40 p.m.
When police arrived, they found Mixer placing items from Publix in the vehicle, along with a bag from LJ's package with liquor, and told her someone was concerned that she may have left a baby in the car, according to the report.
Mixer then told police, "I know, but it was only for a minute and the car is running." Police said the girl was in the back seat with her skin clammy, her face flushed and her hair was showing signs of sweat.
Police also said the vehicle was "uncomfortably warm with the air conditioner unable to maintain a cool environment."
Mixer told police that she went to LJ's, ran back out to check on her baby and she was fine, so she went to Publix for cigarettes and Gatorade.
"I don't like to leave my daughter in the car for more than five minutes but was in the store for seven minutes," Mixer told police in the report.
The caller told police he didn't see Mixer return to the car for as long as he was in the parking lot, which was about 20 minutes. He called police after about 10 minutes, according to the report.
Mixer also said that she had left her baby in the car alone about six times and had just left her alone in the vehicle earlier in the day, according to police.
Police said Mixer's only questions were about her vehicle being removed from the parking lot and how she could bond out of jail.
Mixer was arrested and the baby's father was called to pick the child up.
