The prototype lander, developed by the Johnson Space Center, lifted off from a pad at the north end of the former shuttle runway shortly after 1:15 p.m. Thursday.

Powered by liquid oxygen and liquid methane, the vehicle climbed to about 187 feet, flew forward about 154 feet and then descended to a pad in a hazard field constructed for future tests of autonomous landing sensors.
