Mosquito traps set in Volusia County

Experts worried chikungunya will spread to U.S.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Mosquito traps have been set in Volusia County as officials attempt to track the pesky bugs, which have the potential to carry deadly diseases.

At least three Floridians have contracted chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus that has spread to the Caribbean from Africa, Asia and islands in the Indian Ocean.

All three have "exported" the illness to Florida, health officials said, but experts expect the disease to eventually spread to the U.S., prompting the new traps.

More than six dozen traps have been set up across Volusia County to capture mosquitoes and better understand them.

Volusia is one of two Florida locations using the traps.
