LAKELAND, Fla. - Polk County law enforcement and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have responded to multiple sightings of a monkey in a Lakeland subdivision.
The Lakeland Ledger reports that a woman spotted a monkey eating a grapefruit in her back yard on Monday. It's unclear where the monkey came from, but it's suspected to be a Patas monkey.
Officials placed an infrared camera in the woman's yard, hoping to capture pictures of the primate, which was described as being up to 3 feet tall.
Escaped Patas monkeys made national news after getting away from a Polk County wildlife park in 2008. Authorities said the last of those monkeys was found in December 2008 after eight months of attempts to recapture them.
