Nearly 3,000 pounds of marijuana seized in Orlando

5 arrested after pot found in RV on International Drive

ORLANDO, Fla. – Five people were arrested after nearly 3,000 pounds of marijuana were pulled from a tour bus parked on International Drive.

"That might be the most I've ever seen here in Orlando," said Larry Zwieg, director of the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation.

According to Zwieg, the marijuana was being transported by a Jamaican drug trafficking organization and was to be distributed throughout the state.

"We are looking further into the organization.  We are looking further into this couple who were driving the RV," he said.

The driver of the $400,000 tour bus, Mukesh Rampersad, 51, and his wife Shamila Rampersad, 38, both of Miramar, were arrested after agents closed in on the bus, which was parked at the Kingstown Reef Hotel at 12000 International Drive early Sunday.

Zwieg says agents pulled 2,777 pounds of marijuana from the bus.

The couple is facing drug trafficking charges.

According to county records, Shamila Rampersad was released on Sunday on a $100,150 cash bond, and her husband was released the same day on a $100,300 surety bond.

"If they can come with that kind of a bond that quickly, obviously they've been doing this for a while, so the investigation continues and we expect to make further arrests," said Zwieg.

Affri Chang, Courtney Hutchinson, and Gary Simmonds were also arrested for their involvement with the operation.
