New info released in fatal Winter Park day care crash

KinderCare families get glimpse of day care after crash

WINTER PARK, Fla. – New details were released on Thursday on what led to a fatal crash at a Winter Park day care, including statements from the man behind the wheel of the car that hit the day care.

Albert Campbell, the driver of the Toyota Solara that crashed into the KinderCare Learning Center on Goldenrod Road back in April told investigators he "had taken his foot off the brake as he entered the turn," according to a report.

Investigators reported Campbell then said he saw a silver SUV behind him and attempted to "accelerate out of the way to avoid a collision, but it was less than a second before he was struck from behind by the silver vehicle. He stated the impact was hard enough to shift his vehicle into a harder right turn."

The investigative report also included witness statements placing Robert Corchado, 28, who was charged with pushing the Toyota towards the daycare and leaving the scene of the accident, behind the wheel of the SUV.

Corchado is in Orange County jail.

The release of the information comes the same day that families of the children involved get together before it reopens on Monday to children who were not previously enrolled.

"I mean they've done a great job for the families, I'm glad to be able to bring my daughter back," Shaun Kinney told Local 6.
